good . . . bad . . . nothing

on two different occasions i have picked up a magazine called nylon.  its a glossy, slick, "it girl" magazine.  fashion forward but not trendy.  more edgy i suppose.  it sort of reminds me of a magazine that photographers who are true to their soul would aspire to shoot for.  raw even.

anyway, there was an article in it written about an up and coming actress named mila kunis.  many of you will recognize her by sight if her name does not ring a bell.  regardless, she had a quote that keeps haunting my mind.

if you listen to the good, you have to listen to the bad. so, i listen to nothing.

i sort of like it.  here is why:
  • we put way too much emphasis on what others think
  • one person's good is another person's bad
  • there is no way to please everyone
  • if we listen to nothing we might have the time to hear what our original thoughts are
it's just a thought.  what do you think?

  1. Staci,
Out of context I read that as an insular reaction to the world outside yourself. Listening is a larger thing than simply hearing complaints or compliments. It is noticing and listening to what can be learned from each.
To listen to nothing is by that interpretation to only listen to yourself which can be as destructive as only listening to others.

Clearly there was some context that would make this clearer and prevent misinterpretation such as this. :)

Otherwise I would agree with your take. We put too much stock in the opinions of others. Far too much.
